How tall can a front-yard fence be in Oakland?
As of November 2026, the City of Oakland's fence permit page sets a 6-foot maximum for residential fences and freestanding walls in the front yard, and anything over 3.5 feet there needs zoning approval first. Taller front fences must also stay mostly see-through and sit back from the sidewalk. Wood and metal fences over 7 feet need a building permit.

CommercialWhy does an Oakland fence need a plan before it needs posts?
Oakland is several fence markets in one. Flatland lots in Fruitvale or West Oakland are narrow and level, often with a driveway gate and a security need. North Oakland streets like those in Rockridge and Temescal have older homes, shared back fences and low front fences. In Montclair and the rest of the hills, a fence follows a slope and has to be stepped or racked.
The rules change with the yard, too. A front fence over 3.5 feet goes through zoning review, a pool barrier needs a permit, and a masonry wall over 3 feet needs a building permit. We sort that out at the estimate, not after the crew shows up.
